EditUploaded the version I made to have the club title information. Since I forgot about that.
This is my contest entry for the ID contest at My scanner definitely ate it. I did what I could to it in photoshop to touch it up and fix the colors. I mean, my colors are sooo vibrant and brilliant on paper with my markers, but... ugh, the scan made me SO unhappy! Anyway, it's Danny, Sam, and Ember, my three favorite characters on the show. Although I also really like Stryker. I tried to mimic the style of the cartoon but also add in my own flair of style without getting too far away from the original style. I also just said "style" three times in the same sentence, go me! Media is prismacolor markers and faber castel india ink brush pen for the outlines. I actually created the people and the background separately, can you tell? I tried to make it connect well in photoshop. Danny, Sam, & Ember © Butch Hartman Art © Julie Love 2009 Like my stuff? I don't know anything about Danny Phantom, so I won't be much help on that front.
...I think the areas of flat color work well and (I expect) probably fit best with the style of the show. The background in the top 1/3 of the image, as such, doesn't seem to fit with the rest. In fact, the detail of this draws the eye away from the character, so I would suggest doing something much more subtle with that area, and make sure the highest point(s) of contrast in the piece are the places where you want people to focus. With regard to the lower 2/3 of the background, I don't feel as distracted by it. I would suggest that any line work you have in the background should be smoothed out/very intentional looking. Mostly it's the blue lines under the guy (Danny?)'s elbow that are kinda bugging me. I would either make those more regular and precise or I would eliminate them and do some very subtle texture or a painted gradient instead. (Painted meaning not just the gradient tool! Hope that helps! -- -K Heh, the characters do fit with the show more than the background, however I like the background more. But it's because flat coloring bothers me because my classes teach me it's "wrong."
I could desaturate or take the opacity of the background down some more. I did it all traditional so I don't know that I can clean the lines up. I did it messy and quick purposefully because I blend markers better when I am going fast, plus I wanted a bit of a difference from the foreground (might have made too much). Thanks for the help! -- Commissions + Gift Art + Inspirations Haha, I guess that's why you've got me!
I think that something very subtly textured but mostly flat would work. Otherwise, I think flat color would work well. You can tweak all that stuff in photoshop....that's what I'd suggest, rather than reworking it traditionally. -- -K I'd have no idea how to tweak it in photoshop aside from setting the background up (as it is scanned in separately from the foreground) as a.. crap I forgot the name... tracing layer?
For me to just use as a reference and completely re-do the thing digitally. Coloring it flat and such. Adding texture is easy-peasy. -- Commissions + Gift Art + Inspirations |
